En Allen, me reun\u00ed con Graciela, Javier @ajalmeyra y Martin @mgcipo. Todos ellos juntos con Proyecto Allen @proyectoallen y el Observatorio Petrolero Sur<\/a>, est\u00e1n realizando un tremendo trabajo a nivel local para sensibilizar a la poblaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Las empresas a las que se enfrentan tienen medios colosales a su disposici\u00f3n y no permitir\u00e1 que un par de personas se pongan en su camino. Pero siguen luchando y concienciando a las comunidades.<\/p>\n

@choiquechelenko @nandu_camp tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 haciendo su parte del trabajo. Y muchos m\u00e1s lo est\u00e1n haciendo a diario (@riderwhowrite, @conservacionpatagonica, @puelosintorres, @patagonia_sinrepresas, @_truquera_).<\/p>\n

La verdad es que la situaci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica es tan mala para tantas personas en este mundo que ni siquiera pueden tomar estos temas como una prioridad. \u00bfPor quu\u00e9 es lo que la gente en los suburbios de Santiago, Buenos Aires o Nueva York se preocupa primero cuando algunos apenas tienen que comer d\u00eda tras d\u00eda?<\/p>\n

Todos ustedes que lo hacen, son las estrellas eternas que pasan por el cielo por encima de esta torre de perforaci\u00f3n. Gracias<\/p>\n

A friend of mine, Juan, asked me about ideas to raise awareness about the fracking issue at the most local level.<\/em><\/strong>
\n.<\/em><\/strong>
\nComing to Allen, I met with Graziela, Javier @ajalmeyra and Martin @mgcipo. All of them together with Proyecto Allen @proyectoallen as well as the Observatorio Petrolero Sur are doing a tremendous work at the local level to raise awareness in the population.<\/em><\/strong>
\n.<\/em><\/strong>
\nThe firms they are facing have colossal means at their disposal and will not let a couple of people come in their way. But they keep on fighting and raising awareness in the communities.<\/em><\/strong>
\n.<\/em><\/strong>
\nYou @choiquechelenko @nandu_camp are also doing your part of the job. And many more are doing it on a daily basis (@riderwhowrite, @conservacionpatagonica, @puelosintorres, @patagonia_sinrepresas, @_truquera_).<\/em><\/strong>

\nThe truth is that the economic situation is so bad for so many people in this world that they cannot even take these issues as a priority. What do people in suburbs of Santiago, Buenos Aires or New York City care first about when some hardly have to eat day after day?<\/em><\/strong>

Durante a\u00f1os, el precio de la manzana se hab\u00eda estado balanceando hacia arriba y hacia abajo en el mercado internacional. Ganarse la vida se hizo cada vez m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil.<\/p>\n

Hab\u00edan venido unas d\u00e9cadas antes en este lugar des\u00e9rtico. Un enorme r\u00edo hab\u00eda erosionado la \u00e1rida meseta. Construyeron un sistema de riego inteligente, convirtiendo el valle en un lugar muy f\u00e9rtil, donde plantaron vi\u00f1edos y huertos. Se crearon y distribuyeron miles de peque\u00f1as parcelas. Peque\u00f1os agricultores organizados en cooperativas.<\/p>\n

Los minoristas internacionales comenzaron entonces a fijar los precios. Y los precios bajaron.<\/p>\n

Cuando la compa\u00f1\u00eda petrolera vino a alquilar sus tierras y extraer las riquezas invisibles escondidas en el subsuelo, muchos estuvieron de acuerdo. El alquiler por un solo a\u00f1o equival\u00eda a diez o veinte a\u00f1os de ahorro.<\/p>\n

Con la extracci\u00f3n de gas viene luz toda la noche. En los huertos, la luz en la noche atrae a las plagas. Y las plagas no comen gas, comen manzanas. Los camiones pesados \u200b\u200belevan la suciedad en los \u00e1rboles restantes. Y a pesar de todo el papeleo hecho para prometer que no se producir\u00e1 contaminaci\u00f3n, los accidentes y las filtraciones contin\u00faan sucediendo. La gente de Allen ya no bebe agua del grifo.<\/p>\n

Aquellos de los agricultores que se quedan podr\u00edan hacer una vida decente produciendo productos org\u00e1nicos. El aumento de la calidad podr\u00eda haber significado un aumento de los ingresos.<\/p>\n

Pero \u00bfc\u00f3mo se obtiene un producto org\u00e1nico cuando el agua para sus \u00e1rboles no es potable? \u00bfC\u00f3mo se convierte a org\u00e1nico cuando los derrames de la industria del gas se filtra en sus suelos?<\/p>\n

El Fracking est\u00e1 extrayendo m\u00e1s gases de efecto invernadero del suelo para ponerlo en el aire. El Fracking est\u00e1 matando a los \u00e1rboles, los \u00fanicos pozos de carbono que tenemos a nuestra disposici\u00f3n hasta ahora. El Fracking est\u00e1 matando otras maneras de vivir, aqu\u00ed la cultura agr\u00edcola peque\u00f1a y razonable. Pero el gas puede ser exportado. El gas es una fuente importante de ingresos para la \u00e9lite econ\u00f3mica de una naci\u00f3n. Las manzanas no lo son.<\/p>\n

For years, the price of the apple had been swinging up and down on the international market. Making a living became increasingly difficult.<\/strong><\/em>
\n.<\/strong><\/em>
\nThey had come a few decades earlier in this desertic place. A huge river had eroded the arid plateau. They built a smart irrigation system, converting the valley into a highly fertile place, where they planted vineyards and orchards. Thousands of small parcels were created and distributed. Small farmers organized in cooperatives.<\/strong><\/em>
\n.<\/strong><\/em>
\nInternational retailers then started to fix the prices. And the prices dropped.<\/strong><\/em>
\n.<\/strong><\/em>
\nWhen the oil company came to rent their lands and extract the invisible riches hidden underground, many agreed. The rent for a single year amounted to ten or twenty years of savings.<\/strong><\/em>
\n.<\/strong><\/em>
\nWith gas extraction comes light all night long. In the orchards, light at night attracts the pests. And the pests don’t eat gas, they eat apples. The heavy trucks lift dirt on the remaining trees. And in spite of all the paperwork done to promise that no contamination will occur, accidents and filtrations keep on happening. The people in Allen no longer drink tap water.<\/strong><\/em>
\n.<\/strong><\/em>
\nThose of the farmers who remain could make a decent living by converting to organic. Increased quality could have meant increased incomes.<\/strong><\/em>
\n.<\/strong><\/em>
\nBut how do you get organic when the water for your trees is not drinkable? How do you convert to organic when the spillovers of the gas industry filtrates into your soils?<\/strong><\/em>
\n.<\/strong><\/em>
\nFracking is extracting more greenhouse gas from the ground to put it in the air. Fracking is killing the trees, the only carbon wells we have at our disposal so far. Fracking is killing other ways of living, here the small reasonable farming culture. But gas can be exported. Gas is a major source of revenues for the economic elite of a nation. Apples ain’t.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Ad\u00e1n y Eva quedaron en su huerta contaminada.<\/p>\n
